What Dairy Farming Is?
This type of farming is to provide us consumers with our dairy supply such as milk, cheese, butter, etc. We get our daily use of dairy products from millions and millions of cattle. As of today there is less than 2 percent of the U.S population working in farming due to all the new technologies that are use today. Today many companies claim to say that they treat there animals with care but that is not always the case.
What goes on "Behind Closed Doors"?
I found it very sad to know that this was a daily life for cows, I wish I found a way to end this cruelty in how our dairy products are produced. Some things that I seen in this video were very hard to watch but it just reminds me of all the pain these animals go through and the feeling of vulnerability.
Machinery Used
This photo was provided by The Empire Milking Machine Company in Canada, this photo shows the process of milking a cow. This machine pumps out every four cows milk, as you can see there are single units meaning that one single cows milk goes into a container. As for the double it means that the combination of two cows milk go into one container. Although the milk goes into there separate containers, they are all monitors by the Electric Motor which is like a vacuum that sucks up the cows milk. You could only imagine how painful this is for the cows just think, a pregnant woman with an electrical pump sucking out the milk out of the breasts. If you haven't heard any stories by your mother, breast pumping does make your breast itch and at times you just can't take it. Imagine how a cow feels having there breast milk pump and not being able to do anything to stop the pain.
Affects Of Milking Machines
Although these machines for milking are efficient and fast in getting all that milk out of these precious cows. These vacuum machines cause these cows to have overly sensitive teats (the cows individual breast). If the cows teats are not rested well enough or not properly taken care of than they can cause a slower flow of the milk.
Grass Fed Versus Corn Fed
Keirnan gives a few differences in his article about how grass fed is better than corn fed such as the amount of Omega-3 and the high amount of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA). Omega-3 is very important for a variety of reasons such as: keeping your blood pressure normal, keep your cholesterol normal, keep you from getting discomforts in your joints, and most of all fuel your brain. The CLA is a body fat blocker and in ways that must sound great because it keeps you from creating body fat. It is intended to burn the food you eat faster and it goes back to, after we eat an entire meal from McDonald's the food digests fast and we get hungry again.
Dairy Farming Today
Although this rarely happens, this organization is doing there very best to ensure that these cows get 100 pounds of food everyday, as well as 20-25 gallons of water. They believe that if cows are not well feed, rested, and nurtured than they will not produce milk the way they should. These cows are treated and cared for the way they should and the fact that this treatment is still done it gives us hope. We have so much more power than we might think in changing the way the industries treat cows in slaughterhouses.
